The Canvas

For the first edition of No Sombrero, as a line, we chose a traditional toy called “magic canvases” or “Jacob’s stairs “.
This ancient toy was brought to Mexico from abroad, and over time, it has become an undisputable element of the popular Mexican culture. The real origin of the toy is not completely certain as it could have been from China, Japan or the Middle East.
The toy consists of 6 wooden canvases interlinked by colored strips. These strips cross above and below each canvas.

RELEVANCY OF THE TOY IN MEXICO
This toy itself could be considered as an adopted child of the popular handcrafted Mexican culture. It can be found in any typical market in the country, and is an elementary childhood object of every Mexican.

In this exhibition, the toy represents the cultural roots of Mexico whereas the graphical intervention of the artists and designers represents the contemporary proposal and updated vision of what happens in young Mexico.
